Field Trip Committee needs a new Chairperson

We all want to go places to explore our interests in the hobby – whether it is collecting, caving,  or visiting geological sites/museums most members want more opportunities to learn about our hobby.  This year saw some great progress in developing that aspect of our club.  We need a motivated member to step up and take charge of planning and scheduling field trips.

No one person can come up with all the ideas or do all the work, though.  So even if you aren’t comfortable leading the charge, your help would be appreciated by whomever takes on this responsibility.

If you can help out, contact Laird Fowler.

Annual Show Committee Needs a New Boss

THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED:  Thank You,  Ludie!

Our Annual show is a hugely important activity to our club.  It provides us exposure to new potential members.  It gives us an opportunity to educate the public and swap stories, specimens, knowledge with people of like interests.  And it provides a significant portion of the club’s annual operating budget.

This past year’s chairman’s duties have been fulfilled and we need a new show chairman to take up the reins.   Can you help out?

If you’d like to run the show, or you just want to help out with the show, contact Laird Fowler.

Demonstrators Needed for Paleontological Society of Austin (PSoA) annual show

AGMS has been formally invited to attend  the Austin Gem & Mineral Society to participate in the Paleontological Society of Austin (PSoA) annual show, Fossil Fest.  Their  26th annual show will be held Nov. 19 & 20, 2016 at Old Settlers Association in Round Rock, Texas.  PSoA has held a spot forAGMS to demo cabbing, dino rub, inform the public about AGMS and etc.

Set up will take place on Friday, Nov. 18 from 3pm to 8pm.  The booth will be in the hall with the other dealers where you will get the most traffic.  There will be 3 six foot tables with access to power.  We just need to bring your equipment, lighting, signage and staff!

If you can help, contact James Mercier or Laird Fowler.

October President’s Notes

October is here and so we focus upon OUR show. Your help is needed to ensure that our services, activities and booths are covered. If you haven’t done so, find Brian’s e-mail (jmw…) which has the volunteer schedule. Pick an activity on those days you can help and let Brian know.

We will have a General meeting on Oct 27th. We are trying to get one of the speakers at the show to present their Gem Capers’ program. It’s frustrating to be working and miss one of the talks. By having one of them present at our meeting helps all of us.

We are still scheduled for the field trip scheduled for Oct 29th. Frank Roberts will go with us and share the geology, history, etc. Details will be forwarded later this month.

Speaking about field trips, the Board is seeking suggestions for trips for 2017. We are seeking day as well as overnight(s) trips. We’ll also try co-oping with other rock clubs. Some suggestions have been: topaz hunting,
Emerald Ridge pegmatite, Thanksgiving -West Texas agate hunt, Hot Springs-Arkansas hunt as well as back to the petrified wood ranch. So let me or one of the Board members know of your interests.

See you at GEM CAPERS,
Laird
